Weser cycle path | Variations

From Hann. Münden to Minden

You want an active trip, but you don't want to miss out on art, culture and culinary delights any more than you want to miss out on wonderful landscapes? Then we can say: Welcome to the Weser Cycle Route! This award-winning 520-kilometre route leads from Hann. Münden - almost always along the water - to Cuxhaven on the North Sea. Along the way, you will immerse yourself in fascinating towns, dreamy villages, fairytale settings and feel pure freedom on the bike saddle!

The Discovery Tour in a nutshell

On the Discoverer Tour by Rückenwind Reisen you will explore the section starting from the three-river town of Hann. Münden to the former trading town of Minden. Where the Weser emerges from the Fulda and Werra rivers, a charming townscape with around 700 half-timbered houses awaits you. Not least the fascinating town hall, considered one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance. Dare to take a detour to the Weserstein before the journey really begins!

The first stage takes you along the Weser Valley to Bad Karlshafen, where the agony of choice follows: History in the old town and the Huguenot Museum or relaxation in the Weser thermal baths? Porcelain and fragrances - this is how the route on day 3 could be summarised, leading via Fürstenberg to Holzminden and Bodenwerder. Passing the Pied Piper town of Hameln, the journey finally leads to Minden. A scenic feature on the final stage is the change of the Weser breakthrough from the low mountain range to the North German lowlands at Porta Westfalica.

Regional tresures along the route

Fairytale-like, historic, beautiful: there is an almost infinite amount to discover along the Weser! For long stretches you share the route with the German Fairytale Route. You'll meet the Pied Piper in Hamelin, the "Liar Baron" Münchhausen in Bodenwerder and the famous Doctor Eisenbart in Hann. Münden.

Holzminden is home to one of the world's largest manufacturers of fragrances and aromatic substances. The "fragrant city walk" is an experience for all the senses, but at the 17 scent stelae it is above all a special experience for the nose. In addition to the historic half-timbered buildings, the approximately 1,200-year-old Corvey Castle near Höxter stands out as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lovers of fine tableware, on the other hand, will get their money's worth at the Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory. A special tip from our Rückenwind Community is the Weser Skywalk near Bad Karlshafen, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views

Three facts about your trip

  • Perfect signposting: the Weser Cycle Route has been voted Germany's most popular cycle route several times in the ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club) ranking. No wonder! The route is excellently described and signposted, the quality of the paths is simply top.
  • Flat route: On our discovery tour you cycle a distance of approx. 180 to 235 kilometres - depending on which side of the river you choose on each day. Many sections of the Weser can be cycled on both sides. In addition, you can shorten the stages by train or boat. In combination with the flat terrain, this tour is suitable for cyclists of all kinds, from pleasure cyclists to families.
  • First-class service: For over 30 years, our team at Rückenwind Reisen has been planning and organising your time-out from everyday life. In addition to detailed route guidance, you will receive tried and tested insider tips from us. We tell you where you can enjoy the best views of the Weser Valley and where the best places to stop in Hameln are. Our partner hotels not only ensure relaxation, but also provide you with regional delicacies. And: We are there when you need us!

Itinerary

Your personal tour information and handing over of the bicycles (if booked) is in the evening. A first tour by bicycle you can undertake to the old town of Hann. Münden. We recommend a little stroll through the medieval centre of Hann. Münden with the historic half timbered houses of the Weser Renaissance is very interesting. You will love the splendid old houses.

Start of the bicycle tour on the Weser Rock, exactly where Werra and Fulda embrace each other. You cycle via Reinhardshagen and past the ancient Benedictine monastery Bursfelde to the baroque Huguenot's town Bad Karlshafen. The centre of Bad Karlshafen with its lovely reconstructed baroque houses presents an interesting diversion to the otherwise usual half-timbered houses.

A number of highlights can be encountered along the route: the town Fürstenberg with a renowned porcelain manufacture, the old hanseatic town Höxter with more than 160 mostly half timbered buildings under monuments-protection. The little town Beverungen retained a lot of its historical face. Holzminden is well known for the production of aroma-essences and perfume-oils.

Many an idyllic village on the road invites you to stay. The little town Bodenwerder got certain fame for being the home of the so called "Lying Baron" of Münchhausen. The famous town of the "Rat Catcher from Hameln" has an intact old town with marvellous half-timbered houses and buildings in the typical style of the Weser Renaissance, dating back to the 16th and 17th century.

Near Porta Westfalica the river breaks through the Wiehen- and Weser mountain ranges and reaches the Northern German lowlands. The small town Rinteln, originating from the 13th century still has many buildings from the Weser Renaissance. Bad Oeynhausen has the world biggest carbonic acid thermal spring. Minden once was a flourishing trading centre but was destroyed in great parts during World War II. It was reconstructed in an exemplary way. Individual departure.

The route

The Weser River Cycle Path follows mainly side roads with only scarce traffic as well as dedicated asphalted cycle paths and country roads. Only few differences in altitude have to be managed, therefore this cycle path is highly recommended for beginners or families with children.
