Weser bike path | Variation Discoverer

From Hann. Münden to Minden

You want an active trip, but you don't want to miss out on art, culture and culinary delights any more than you want to miss out on wonderful landscapes? Then we can say: Welcome to the Weser Cycle Route! This award-winning 520-kilometer (323 mi) route leads from Hann. Münden - almost always along the water - to Cuxhaven on the North Sea. Along the way, you will immerse yourself in fascinating towns, dreamy villages, fairytale settings and feel pure freedom on the bike saddle!

The Discovery Tour in a nutshell

On the Discoverer Tour by Rückenwind Reisen you will explore the section starting from the three-river town of Hann. Münden to the former trading town of Minden. Where the Weser emerges from the Fulda and Werra rivers, a charming townscape with around 700 half-timbered houses awaits you. Not least the fascinating town hall, considered one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance. Dare to take a detour to the Weserstein before the journey really begins!

The first stage takes you along the Weser Valley to Bad Karlshafen, where the agony of choice follows: History in the old town and the Huguenot Museum or relaxation in the Weser thermal baths? Porcelain and fragrances - this is how the route on day 3 could be summarised, leading via Fürstenberg to Holzminden and Bodenwerder. Passing the Pied Piper town of Hameln, the journey finally leads to Minden. A scenic feature on the final stage is the change of the Weser breakthrough from the low mountain range to the North German lowlands at Porta Westfalica.

Regional tresures along the route

Fairytale-like, historic, beautiful: there is an almost infinite amount to discover along the Weser! For long stretches you share the route with the German Fairytale Route. You'll meet the Pied Piper in Hamelin, the "Liar Baron" Münchhausen in Bodenwerder and the famous Doctor Eisenbart in Hann. Münden.

Holzminden is home to one of the world's largest manufacturers of fragrances and aromatic substances. The "fragrant city walk" is an experience for all the senses, but at the 17 scent stelae it is above all a special experience for the nose. In addition to the historic half-timbered buildings, the approximately 1,200-year-old Corvey Castle near Höxter stands out as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lovers of fine tableware, on the other hand, will get their money's worth at the Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory. A special tip from our Rückenwind Community is the Weser Skywalk near Bad Karlshafen, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views

Itinerary

After your individual arrival in Hann. Münden in the late afternoon, you will be given information and handed over your bikes (if booked). The three-river town is where the Fulda and Werra rivers meet at the Weserstein to form the Weser. Over 700 restored half-timbered houses from six centuries make up Hann. Mündens city centre. The town hall of Hann. Münden is considered one of the most beautiful representative buildings from the Weser Renaissance.

You start your journey at the Weserstein. On your way to Bad Karlshafen, you will pass the charming village of Hemeln in the Weser valley and the former Benedictine abbey of Bursfelde, founded in 1093. Bad Karlshafen's baroque old town forms a charming contrast to the Weser Renaissance and the town's Huguenot Museum is a reminder of its founders. But perhaps you might also be tempted by a visit to the Weser thermal baths? ‘Brine spa’ is another of Bad Karlshafen's nicknames. You can stay overnight in the town or in neighbouring Beverungen with its partly preserved moated castle of the same name.

Today you cycle past the porcelain town of Fürstenberg with the castle of the same name and the old Hanseatic town of Höxter as well as Corvey Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to Holzminden or on to Bodenwerder. Holzminden is nicknamed the ‘town of fragrances and flavours’ because the production of fragrances and flavours is very important here. And so a fragrant tour leads to the sights of the town. Bodenwerder is the home of Baron Münchhausen, known as the Baron of Lies, to whom a museum is dedicated.

Many a romantic village along the way invites you to linger. Corvey Castle, the former imperial abbey near Höxter, offers a delightful mix of art and culture. The romantic town of Bodenwerder was made famous by the world-famous Baron of Lies von Münchhausen. The Pied Piper town of Hamelin impresses with its intact old town, wonderful half-timbered houses and buildings in the typical Weser Renaissance style from the 16th and 17th centuries.

At Porta Westfalica, the river breaks through the Wiehen and Weser mountains and reaches the North German lowlands. On the way, the small town of Rinteln, dating back to the 13th century, boasts numerous Weser Renaissance buildings. Minden was once a flourishing trading town in the Middle Ages, but was badly destroyed in the Second World War. It was rebuilt as part of an exemplary urban redevelopment programme.

Individual return journey or additional overnight stay in Minden.
