Provence, Camargue and the sea

Enjoy the city with the wonderful architectural monuments from Roman times. The great theatre and the triumph arch are historical witnesses from this epoch. The old town attracts with Provençal charm as well as small pretty shops and cafés.

The first stage takes you through beautiful vineyards to the famous wine village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Take the opportunity to taste a glass of this legendary wine.  Cycle on to Avignon on a lively journey. The pretty old town of Avignon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the 14th century papal palace and the unfinished bridge.

Today’s route takes you first to St Rémy, perhaps the most beautiful, but certainly one of the most typical little towns in Provence. Under the shade of the plane trees in the old streets of the historic centre, the hustle and bustle, the riot of colour and the abundance of herbal scents are hard to beat. A climb up into the Alpilles is rewarded with a magnificent view of Les Baux, making the slight effort well worth it. Les Baux is also known as the ‘town in the rock’ due to its harmonious layout and the ruins of its fortress. Carefully selected narrow paths and lanes lead on to Arles. Roman culture and Romanesque heritage characterise the townscape and history of Arles. Arles was the second most important city in the Roman Empire, but it is also the city of Vincent van Gogh. From Arles, the route winds its way through the unique landscape of the Camargue. Vast salt marshes, lagoons and rice fields line the route, where, with a bit of luck, you may spot flamingos, white Camargue horses and black bulls. At the Domaine de Méjanes, a narrow-gauge railway invites you to take a round trip through the nature reserve. The journey then continues to the famous pilgrimage town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, which delights visitors with its Mediterranean charm, a Romanesque fortified church and long sandy beaches.

You have a whole day at your leisure to explore Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and its charming surroundings. Why not go for a cycle ride along the coast, where the Mediterranean Sea and the vast étangs merge to form a unique natural landscape? You can decide on the length of the route yourself, depending on your preferences and fitness level – from a short ride to an extended exploration. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, and you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the unspoilt Camargue countryside. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can spend the day on the vast sandy beaches and enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea.

Today is all about the Camargue at its best. The cycle route first takes you through the tranquil expanses of the lagoon landscape to the Étang de Scamandre, one of the region’s most important wetlands. With a bit of luck, you’ll be able to spot flamingos, herons and numerous other waterbirds in their natural habitat. You’ll then follow the Canal du Rhône à Sète all the way to Aigues-Mortes. This perfectly preserved medieval town, with its imposing city walls, provides a stunning finale to the day. Nature, water and the unmistakable charm of the Camargue will accompany you right to your destination.

Today you’ll leave the Camargue behind and cycle through the vast countryside of the Petit Camargue. Passing through the historic town of Vauvert, the route takes you along quiet paths through vineyards, orchards and Mediterranean farmland. Gradually, the unspoilt natural landscape of the Camargue gives way to the Provençal charm of the Gard. Finally, you’ll reach Nîmes, whose impressive Roman monuments bear witness to the city’s long history. A stroll through the lively old town provides an atmospheric end to this varied day.

From Nîmes, the tour takes you to the famous Pont du Gard, the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This imposing structure is well worth a visit, and it’s the perfect spot to take a break by the River Gardon. The route then follows a former railway line that has been transformed into an excellently maintained cycle path. Away from motor traffic, you can cycle at a leisurely pace through vineyards, olive groves and the fragrant garrigue to the charming little town of Uzès. With its picturesque alleyways, elegant squares and southern French charm, Uzès is one of the most beautiful places in the region.

Today, the landscape changes once again. Your final stage takes you through the hilly garrigue landscape, covered in kermes oaks and Mediterranean herbs. Later on, the vineyards and lovely orchards of Provence come to the fore once more. You cross the Rhône. On the other side of the river, you’ll cycle through the southern French village of Caderousse and reach the town of Orange again in the afternoon. Overnight stay in Orange.
