The essentials at a glance

Cycle through Provence's lavender fields and picturesque villages on this moderate round trip. Starting from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the route leads through Vaison-la-Romaine, Sault (the lavender capital), and the Luberon Natural Park. Daily distances range from 45-60 km on small, quiet roads. Highlights include the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains, Mont Ventoux views, charming villages like Roussillon and Gordes, and the famous Fontaine-de-Vaucluse spring.

Experience Provence at the very moment when the violet blossoms of the lavender bush unfold in their full splendour. The beguiling scent and the unique play of colours in the large lavender fields are a very special experience. On this tour you will cycle through one of the largest lavender areas in Provence, enjoy the play of the blossoms in the wind and the picturesque scenery around Mont Ventoux. Along the way, there are numerous pretty little towns and many a sight to discover. A trip for France lovers and friends of unique nature and culture. You will be thrilled.

Self-guided tour

Itinerary

Individual arrival to Isel-sur-la-Sorgue. The small old town on an island in Sorgue is really famous for the range of antique shops and the old romantic water wheels.

Through wide agricultural fields you cycle to past Carpentras to the former main town of Comtat Venaissin. Behind Beaumes-de-Venise, where one of the best dessert wines is pressed, you pass the "Denteeles des Montmirail and cycle to the old romans town Vaison-la-Romaine.

You will drive through the picturesque villages of Mollans and Montbrun-les-Bains to the Plateau d'Albion and through the magnificent lavender fields to Sault, the “capital of lavender.” Here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the purple-colored lavender fields below Mont Ventoux. Overnight stay in Sault.

An extended bike tour through lavender fields is awaiting you again. Awesome flavour and the unique play of colours are accompanying you. You route leads you along the plateau and through oak and chestnut forests back to Sault.

You should visit the market in Sault in the morning. Afterwards you continue through dreamy villages and the nature park Luberon to Apt, homeland of candied fruits. One overnight in Apt. or the surrounding area.

The wonderful towns Bonnieux, Boux and Saignon are on this challenging route through the Luberon before you come back to Apt (appr. 55km). For those who prefer a more comfortable tour start to Gargas, where you'll find the last working ochre quarry in France. (appr. 45km) Further night in Apt or the surrounding area.

You pass the wonderful village Roussillon, it was a long time the centre of the ochre pit. Afterwards you pass the town Gordes to the famous spring Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

The tour ends after breakfast. Individual return journey or extend your stay.

Moderate

This is an ambitious bike tour for experienced cyclists. There are stages as in Tuscany awaiting you. Day 3 and day 6 are with longer stages, but lavender fields, beautiful views and awesome downhill routes are compensating for the efforts. You cycle along small roads with less traffic.

Arrival / Parking

  • Fly to Marseille. Take the train (TGV) from Marseille airport to the main train station of L´Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Good rail connection, Duration approx. 1 h. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is well-connected by train.
  • Depending on the arrival hotel and availability, free or paid parking spaces or public car parks in the side streets. No reservation possible.       

Hotels

Carefully selected hotels offering high standards and a cosy atmosphere, all lovingly run. Most are in the 4-star category (French classification), some with air conditioning and a swimming pool. In Arles, accommodation is provided, subject to availability, in either a 3-star hotel or a 4-star hotel on the outskirts of the city.
