Ems between Romance and Tradition

The Ems is 371 km long. It floats from the spring in North Rhine-Westphalia to Emden where it flows into the Northern Sea. Follow this river through romantic marsh-landscape, visit small seaports and cities with impressive architecture. Enjoy this easy-to-ride tour from Emden to Münster.

Itinerary

Tour information and fitting rental bicycles (if booked) in the evening.

Today you cycle through the "Emdettener Venn" to Rheine. Nice to the is the monastery "Bentlage" as well as the market square in Rheine. (approx. 65 km)

You cycle on the ems bike path to Lingen. Lingen has a nice historical building, the town hall. (approx. 38 km)

The international park "Borutanger Moor-Margerveen" shows the former life in this moor region. Today you reach Meppen. The beautiful city beside the river ems presents itself with many historical buildings. (approx. 36 km)

Bike Tour Ems

Drive through the "Dörpener water landscape" with lakes, rivers, forest, heath and moor. Today you cycle to Papenburg, the venice of the north. Worth seeing is the "Meyer Werft" which built the large luxury liner. You must reserve at: phone 0049 4961/83960 or www.papenburg-tourismus.de (approx. 64 km)

The North Sea coast is coming closer - today you reach Leer. (approx. 35  km)

Take the ferry from Ditzun to Petkum (not inclusive). Today you have enough time to enjoy a nice evening in Emden. (approx. 35 km)

The route

The Cycle Tour along the Ems is  located in an ideal countryside. All routes are flat! You cycle on asphalted or plastered country lanes, sometimes on minor roads. This road is perfectly suited for beginners or groups.

Ein Erlebnis von Natur und freundlichen Menschen
Die Wegstrecke war hervorragend geführt, größtenteils gut ausgeschildert und vorallem verkehrsberuhigt.Einen Teil der Etappen hätten man verlängern können. Mir waren sie oft zu kurz. Mein Vorschlag: Wenn schon 8 Tage, dann in Paderborn beginnen, oder in Norden enden lassen. Selbst untrainiert, können ca. 60 bis Kilometer in sieben Stunden schaffen.

Abwechslungsreiche und empfehlenswerte Tour
abwechslungsreicher Streckenverlauf in schöner Landschaft entlang der Ems und des Dortmund-Ems-Kanals, wenig Autoverkehr, schöne Hotels, nette Städte, ausreichend Einkehrmöglichkeiten an der Radstrecke
