Lahn cycle path | short trip

Quiet. Legendary. Enchanted

A little more than a weekend - but a real holiday. On this cycle tour, you start in the lively university town of Marburg, famous for the Elisabeth Church and the Landgrave's Palace. Look forward to the relaxed atmosphere in the city with its quaint student pubs. Tourism, culture and history have always been mutually inspiring in Marburg. This was already the case in the 13th century: The Teutonic Order built the first Gothic hall church on German soil in honour of Saint Elisabeth, who died here in 1231. St Elisabeth's Church became a destination for pilgrims from all over the country - a first form of tourism. Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous laid the foundation stone for the cosmopolitan university town with students and visitors from all over the world by founding the university in 1527. Enjoy the tranquillity in the idyllic alleyways of the historic half-timbered town of Wetzlar and marvel at the world-famous Limburg Cathedral and the completely listed city centre. Immerse yourself in the flow of time. The living Middle Ages in a modern city. Let's start with the old bridge. In earlier times, a ford was used here to cross the Lahn, and the first wooden bridge was built in the middle of the 12th century.  Enjoy a scenic highlight on the last day of cycling, away from all traffic as you cycle through unspoilt valley scenery before your journey comes to an end in Bad Ems.

Itinerary

You should plan enough time to visit the historic old town and the Elisabeth Church (DB journey possible, car park at the hotel for a fee, bike hire at the hotel).

Today you cycle through the wide Lahn valley past idyllic bathing ponds to Wetzlar. Explore Wetzlar's old town and the interesting cathedral on a walk in the afternoon.

You leave Wetzlar over the stone bridge and soon reach the Fortuna mine (+ 8 km), the only iron ore mine in Germany, where visitors can see a demonstration of ore mining underground using original machinery. The route to Weilburg, whose Renaissance castle sits on a high rocky ridge above the Lahn, is an unforgettable landscape. The course of the river then winds its way between the Taunus and Westerwald. You cycle along the tarmac towpath via Aumenau and Runkel to Limburg with its world-famous cathedral.

Enjoy a scenic highlight today: off the beaten track through an unspoilt valley landscape from Diez to Balduinstein. There are two climbs on this day, one of which you can comfortably bypass by train (11 km). Afterwards, take a break at Arnstein Monastery or Nassau Castle before cycling into Bad Ems.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
