Itinerary

The Lahnquelle is located in the centre of Germany in the beautiful Rothaargebirge mountains. You will spend the night directly at the source of the Lahn in the middle of the forest in the cosy and comfortable ‘Forsthaus Lahnquelle’.

The first day of cycling flies by. From the source of the Lahn, you cycle through wooded countryside via Feudingen to Bad Laasphe and via Biedenkopf to the old university town of Marburg. The famous Elisabeth Church and the Marburg Landgrave's Castle are well worth a visit here. Culture and history have always inspired each other in Marburg. Let yourself be captivated by the fairytale-like old town. Enjoy pleasant evenings in restaurants or quaint student pubs.

Today you cycle through the wide Lahn floodplains via Giessen to the cathedral city of Wetzlar. Be sure to plan a visit to the old town - it's worth it! A visit to the visitor mine Grube Fortuna (+ approx. 6 km) and the view from the fairytale Braunfels Castle are also well worth seeing.

Another highlight is on your programme. You cycle along the Lahn cycle path to Weilburg, whose Renaissance castle is not to be missed! You follow the Lahn cycle path very close to the river. Visit what is probably Germany's largest castle ruin in Runkel before visiting the world-famous Limburg Cathedral and the beautiful old town centre.

Once again, the Lahn cycle path offers the ultimate in cycling pleasure. Cycle along the former towpath to Balduinstein. On this section, you will enjoy a picture-book cycle path! A refreshment stop at the Lahnwinzer on the Lahn refreshes your mind and palate. Visit Nassau Castle and the traditional Fürstenbad Bad Ems spa, which is well worth seeing, before the Rhine Valley opens up before your eyes. In Lahnstein, it's time to say goodbye to the idyllic course of the Lahn, as you follow the Rhine Cycle Path for the last few kilometres to the centre of Koblenz.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.

Tour character

Easy to moderate

The Lahn cycle path leads through charming and varied landscapes with forests, hills, meadows, floodplains and steep slopes dotted with rocks. In 2006, the Lahn Valley Cycle Route was one of the first cycle routes in Germany to be awarded 4 out of 5 possible stars by the ADFC. Among other things, it was assessed for its navigability, signposting, safety and tourist infrastructure. You cycle on mostly flat, tarmac cycle and hiking paths away from traffic, with only the occasional small climb to contend with. The route is well and uniformly signposted throughout. For the most part, a railway line runs parallel to the cycle path.
