Arrival in Cottbus
Individual arriva to Cottbus. The metropolitan city in the Lausitz region is one of Germany’s greenest cities with several parks.
Leaving Cottbus you may cycle directly to Burg or make a side trip to Vetschau which is located on the edge of the Spree Forest.
You leave Lübbenau, not without enjoying the colorful market hustle and bustle at the large harbor. From Lübben you cycle through a wonderful landscape of ponds to Schlepzig, the most beautiful village in the Lower Spreewald. There are many sights to visit, such as the farmer's museum, a brewery and a distillery, a small barge ferry port and the UNESCO biosphere reserve visitor center. Afterwards, a detour to Lake Köthen is recommended for all bathing enthusiasts, before heading back to Lübben through the Brandenburg pine forest.
Departing Lübben, continue cycling through the serene forest and meadows of the biosphere reserve. You may want to take a small detour through Alt Zauche to Straupitz and visit the church conceptualized by the late architect, Schinkel. The linseed oil mill is also a great point of interest. You spend the night in Burg.
In the scattered settlement of Burg, you can get to know the Spreewald from the water by canoe or on a relaxing boat trip. Over 200 rivers offer excellent conditions for this. The Burg thermal spa also invites you to relax with its 36°C warm brine. For all cyclists, there are two dreamy Spreewald villages in the immediate vicinity, past bathing lakes and finally a 4 km ride through the high forest.
From the Bismarck Tower, you cycle along the old Spreewald railway line. You reach the stork village of Dissen with its interesting local history and stork museum. Experience a successful river restoration between Dissen and Maiberg. The route then leads to the old fortified town of Peitz and on through the Peitz ponds, where you can stop for a bite to eat. Cottbuser Ostsee, which is being created from a former open-cast lignite mine and will become the largest artificial lake in Germany once it is flooded, is also located along the way.
