Weser bike path | Epicure

In 11 days from Hann. Münden to Cuxhaven

The river Weser is one of the most important German rivers. The starting point of this tour is the idyllic half timbered town Hann. Münden. Already here in the small town you encounter the impressive Weser Renaissance with carefully reconstructed half timbered houses. From here you follow the meandering river through the "Weserbergland" (Weser mountains), having many hidden treasures. You travel trough medieval half timbered towns, such as Höxter, Rinteln or Hamelin. Visit the "Lying Baron Münchhausen" in Bodenwerder or see the original site of the tale of the "Pied Piper of Hamelin".

Here you can find more information and tips about cycling holidays on the Weser Cycle Path.

Itinerary

After your individual arrival in Hann. Münden in the late afternoon, you will be given information and handed over your bikes (if booked). The three-river town is where the Fulda and Werra rivers meet at the Weserstein to form the Weser. Over 700 restored half-timbered houses from six centuries make up Hann. Mündens city centre. The town hall of Hann. Münden is considered one of the most beautiful representative buildings from the Weser Renaissance.

You start your journey at the Weserstein. On your way to Bad Karlshafen, you will pass the charming village of Hemeln in the Weser valley and the former Benedictine abbey of Bursfelde, founded in 1093. Bad Karlshafen's baroque old town forms a charming contrast to the Weser Renaissance and the town's Huguenot Museum is a reminder of its founders. But perhaps you might also be tempted by a visit to the Weser thermal baths? ‘Brine spa’ is another of Bad Karlshafen's nicknames. You can stay overnight in the town or in neighbouring Beverungen with its partly preserved moated castle of the same name.

Today you cycle past the porcelain town of Fürstenberg with the castle of the same name and the old Hanseatic town of Höxter as well as Corvey Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to Holzminden or on to Bodenwerder. Holzminden is nicknamed the ‘town of fragrances and flavours’ because the production of fragrances and flavours is very important here. And so a fragrant tour leads to the sights of the town. Bodenwerder is the home of Baron Münchhausen, known as the Baron of Lies, to whom a museum is dedicated.

Today, romantic villages and Corvey Castle are on your way. Until 1792, the castle was a Benedictine abbey, one of the most influential in the Franconian Empire. The former abbey church, among other things, bears witness to this time. You spend the night in Hamelin or Rinteln. The legendary figure of the Pied Piper is commemorated in Hamelin by the Pied Piper's House, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Like Hamelin, Rinteln has a magnificent old town centre: the illuminated historic market square also has its charm in the evening.

At Porta Westfalica, you pass from the lower Weser Uplands into the North German Plain. Your journey takes you to Minden. The town, which is over 1,200 years old, is known for its waterway crossing, which leads the Mittelland Canal over the Weser on a bridge. A signposted route takes you to the sights in Minden's old town around the Cathedral of St Gorgonius and St Peter.

Wide floodplains, individual farms and windmills characterise the Mittelweser region, which you cycle through today. Nienburg awaits you as the destination of the day's tour. The town has been an important trading centre and crossing point over the Weser for many years since the 13th century. Such a place naturally needs to be defended. And so you can still see parts of the fortifications and bulwarks that protected Nienburg back then. Bear paws on the street lead to places of interest, such as the half-timbered town hall or the asparagus museum.

Today's route is characterised by a vast landscape that offers little resistance to the view. The region is rural and unspoilt, interspersed with small villages and individual farmsteads. You reach the equestrian and horse town of Verden, which has erected a monument to the noble animals with the German Horse Museum. The town's most impressive sacred building is Verden Cathedral. The best way to get to know old and romantic Verden is on a walk through the fishermen's quarter.

The Bremen Town Musicians and the Roland statue, which together with the town hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are world-famous. Historic Bremen can be seen in the Schnoorviertel and Böttcherstraße, while the Schlachte, Bremen's historic riverside promenade, is a culinary delight. Your individual return journey begins in the afternoon. Alternatively, you can start your extension day and enjoy the Hanseatic city of Bremen to the full.

From Bremen, follow the Weser cycle path through Lemwerder and to Elsfleth with its famous Hunte barrage.

The route continues along the Weser via Brake to Nordenham. Take the Blexen ferry to Bremerhaven. The Emigration Centre, the Climate House and the extensive harbour facilities await you here.

Your tour takes you along tarmac paths and small roads through the Land Wursten to the dune coast of Cuxhaven. The world's busiest shipping lane and its museum harbour make Cuxhaven a maritime cosmopolitan city. In the afternoon individual return journey or extension.

Itinerary

Individual arrival in Hann. Münden. In the late afternoon, there will be an information meeting and the handover of bicycles (if booked). An initial familiarisation tour by bike could take you to the old town of Hann. Münden. A stroll through the medieval town centre with its historic half-timbered buildings from the Weser Renaissance is highly recommended. Overnight stay in Hann. Münden.

Your cycle tour should start at Weserstein, right where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet. Passing through Hemeln and the former Benedictine monastery of Bursfelde, the stage leads to the baroque Huguenot town of Bad Karlshafen. With its pretty, renovated houses in Baroque style, the centre of Bad Karlshafen offers an interesting contrast to the otherwise idyllic half-timbered houses. Overnight accommodation is either in Bad Karlshafen or Beverungen. One night's accommodation in Bad Karlshafen or Beverungen.

Many romantic villages along the way invite you to linger. The romantic town of Bodenwerder became famous thanks to the world-renowned Baron Münchhausen. The Pied Piper town of Hamelin captivates visitors with its intact old town, wonderful half-timbered houses and buildings in the typical Weser Renaissance style of the 16th and 17th centuries. Overnight stay in Hameln or Rinteln.

At Porta Westfalica, the river breaks through the Wiehen and Weser mountains and reaches the North German lowlands. Along the way, the 13th-century town of Rinteln offers numerous buildings from the Weser Renaissance. Minden was once a thriving trading town in the Middle Ages, but was severely damaged during the Second World War. It was rebuilt as part of an exemplary urban redevelopment project. Overnight stay in Minden.

Today, you’ll be riding through the historic landscape of the Middle Weser, the county of Hoya, on the Weser Cycle Route. In this distinctive Weser marshland, you'll find unspoilt villages and scattered farmsteads. After this nature-filled stage, Verden offers a fitting finale. The town's landmark is its cathedral. Verden is known as a town of horsemen and horses. Overnight stay in Verden.

This stage takes you through wide river landscapes, past shipyards, small villages and green dykes. The route is flat throughout and ideal for a relaxed day trip. Along the way, cosy rest areas invite you to take a break – with a view of the Weser or refreshments in one of the regional Melkhus. The destination is Elsfleth, a small town with maritime flair on the Hunte, which invites you to linger. Overnight stay in Elsfleth.

This stage takes you through tranquil river landscapes, past dykes, meadows and small farms. The flat route is ideal for relaxed cycling – with plenty of nature and wide open spaces. Bremerhaven offers maritime flair: ships, museums and views of the open Weser estuary make for an impressive finale. Overnight stay in Bremerhaven.

The route leads through open landscapes, accompanied by a fresh breeze and wide skies. The closer you get to the coast, the more noticeable the North Sea becomes. The salty air heralds your proximity to the North Sea. In Cuxhaven, the Wadden Sea, fresh sea air and views of passing ships await you – an atmospheric end to your journey. No further overnight stay in Cuxhaven, but we are happy to book additional nights for you if you wish.
