Itinerary

Stroll through the enchanting city and marvel at world-class art history.

In the morning, take the train to Arezzo. Here it is worth taking a short walk through the magnificent old town. You cycle through the Val di Chiana valley on leisurely paths. The enchanting town of Cortona soon appears before you, but you continue cycling through olive groves and over gentle hills to Lake Trasimeno. The cycle path along the lakeshore takes you directly to historic Passignano.

Cycle along the lakeshore to the ancient town of Castiglione and enjoy another magnificent view of Lake Trasimeno. Now you leave Umbria and immerse yourself in the hilly landscape of Tuscany. Through the vineyards of the famous Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, you approach the town enthroned on the mountain. Here you can stroll through the medieval alleyways in the evening and enjoy the views over the picturesque landscape.

Cycle along a winding road lined with cypress trees towards the authentic fortified village of Montechiello. The white “Strade Bianche” roads lead to the Renaissance town of Pienza, also famous as the film set for Hollywood's “Gladiator”. The picture-book landscape of the Val d'Orcia accompanies you on the way to Montalcino. One of Italy's most famous red wines, Brunello, is produced here with passion. Sample this fine wine in one of the many wine shops.

Cycle along the famous “Eroica” routes through golden, shimmering wheat fields. The play of colors on the hills is just as inspiring as the cypress avenues leading to the stately homes from earlier times. From afar, you can see the towering Palazzo del Publicco in today's stage destination of Siena. Roll across the famous Campo square, where the annual Palio horse race is held.

Enjoy great views over the vineyards on a beautiful mountain road. Take a break in the stone village of Vagliali and enjoy a good Italian cappuccino before cycling along a white road through vineyards and deciduous forests to Radda. Fortify yourself for lunch with a typical plate of pasta and enjoy the atmosphere of this village gem. Wine lovers and cycling enthusiasts should definitely take the tour via Castellina through the heart of Chianti.

The hilly route continues towards Florence. The route winds past stately vineyards, olive groves and through medieval villages to Greve in Chianti. You are still accompanied by typical stone houses, cypress avenues and magnificent views. The capital of Tuscany draws ever closer and you cycle comfortably on a long descent to the Ponte Vecchio. You are sure to have found your favorite Tuscan wine this week. Treat yourself to it again at the end of your trip in beautiful Florence.

Individual return journey, extension or combination with the tours “Venice - Florence” and “Florence - Rome”.

Tour character

High level

Most of the cycling is on hilly terrain and so from the second stage onwards there are several, sometimes steep, climbs to master each day. The route runs along side roads with little traffic and the so-called Strade Bianche. These are almost traffic-free gravel roads that are easy to cycle on. When entering and leaving the city, you should expect heavy traffic from time to time.
