Seven reasons to go on a cycling vacation at Lake Constance

Only seven? There are plenty more reasons to go on a cycling trip

Seven good reasons for a cycling vacation on Lake Constance? Only seven? There are many more. The mild climate, wonderful cycling tours through three beautiful countries, an almost maritime atmosphere against a charming mountain backdrop… the list could go on almost endlessly. So it wasn’t easy to limit the following list to just seven reasons. In the end, though, we had to make a decision. And we did.

1) A lake with an international atmosphere

The Lake Constance Cycle Route is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Europe. Along the way, you’ll get to know three beautiful countries: Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The route passes through cities such as Bregenz, Austria, with its floating stage and world-famous festival; Konstanz, Germany, with its picturesque historic old town; and Schaffhausen, Switzerland, home to the famous Rhine Falls, the largest and most voluminous waterfall in Europe.

2) Over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year

Lake Constance enjoys over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. The climate around the lake is mild and is sometimes even described as Mediterranean. These are ideal conditions for a wonderful vacation. The lake’s water temperatures are also mild. From July through September, they consistently exceed 20 degrees Celsius.

3) Easy bike rides through beautiful mountain scenery

On the Lake Constance Cycle Route, you’ll ride almost exclusively along the lakeshore. You’ll frequently catch glimpses of majestic Alpine peaks. However, you’ll rarely have to tackle any steep inclines. Cycling tours like our Lake Constance loop tours are therefore rated at difficulty levels 1 to 2 out of 5, making them ideal for beginners and cycling groups.

4) The islands are just as beautiful as the lake

Mainau Island in Lake Constance is also known as the “Flower Island.” It is famous for its parks and gardens, where even subtropical and tropical plants thrive. Experience the beauty of nature, for example, in the Italian Rose Garden or along the Hydrangea Trail. Architecturally noteworthy are the island’s Baroque castle and the adjacent castle church. The equally beautiful Lake Constance island of Reichenau, with its monastery of the same name, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5) At Lake Constance, you can combine a cycling and swimming vacation

A cycling trip or a beach vacation? At Lake Constance, you don’t have to choose. The Lake Constance Cycle Route often takes you past charming swimming spots where you can take a break from cycling to go for a swim or splash around in the lake. Not in the mood for swimming? Then why not take a boat from the White Fleet of Lake Constance for a wonderful trip on the water?

6) A cycling vacation on Lake Constance is fun for kids, too

A perfect example of this is our family cycling tour around the Obersee (Lake Constance consists of the Obersee and Untersee). During this cycling tour, you’ll visit attractions such as Ravensburger Spieleland and the famous pile dwellings in Uhldingen. Experience reconstructed villages from the Stone and Bronze Ages at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of course, there’s plenty of swimming fun on this family trip, too. That makes the kids just as happy as their parents.

7) The food around Lake Constance is really delicious, too

Thanks to the mild climate, you can look forward to excellent wines at Lake Constance. You can also sample traditional German, Austrian, and Swiss dishes from the Lake Constance region and enjoy fish caught fresh from the lake.
