Lake Constance cycle path

Cycling holidays on the Swabian Sea

Cycling holidays on Lake Constance are enjoying great popularity this year. The flat lakeside paths on Lake Constance are ideal for beginners but also for holidaymakers who want to cycle in a relaxed manner. You cycle against the magnificent backdrop of the Alps.

A very special flair on this cycle tour

Important monasteries, beautiful country churches and countless castles and magnificent buildings bear witness to the cultural significance of this region in the heart of Europe. The island of Mainau will also welcome you on the Lake Constance cycle path. There are many cultural and relaxing highlights along the way: the Rosgarten Museum in Constance, a boat trip to the Rhine Falls and a boat trip from Gaienhofen to Reichenau.

The Lake Constance cycle path

This long-distance cycle route is around 260 kilometres (162 mi) long and leads around Lake Constance. It is one of the most popular cycle routes in Europe. With an area of 536 km2, Lake Constance is the largest lake in Germany. One of its special features is that it belongs to Germany as well as Austria and Switzerland. The climate around Lake Constance is very mild with warm summers and temperate winters and is therefore often described as Mediterranean. A perfect cycle route!

Itinerary

You start your tour in Constance, Lake Constance’s biggest town. 600 years ago this was where the Council of Constance took place, the only council to elect a pope that was held north of the Alps. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance here: 0 kilometres on its way to the North Sea. Only a few minutes by foot from the medieval town centre is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbour.

First you cycle along the Gnadensee lake to the old imperial and present-day spa town of Radolfzell. From here you cross the Bodanrück and have to accept a very short ascent. The Überlinger Lake Überlingen makes up for this with great views.

Cycle via Meersburg with its old castle and beautiful old town to Friedrichshafen. Your journey continues through extensive orchards to the stage destination of Kressbronn or Nonnenhorn.

Today, the journey continues leisurely across the Austrian border to Bregenz - the capital of Vorarlberg and famous for its annual Lake Festival. Take a break here and take the cable car up the Pfänder, the town's local mountain - the reward is a fantastic view of Lake Constance. Just a stone's throw away, you are already in Switzerland and can cycle to Höchst/Rorschach or Arbon.

Today's cycle tour takes you through Romanshorn with its largest Lake Constance harbour in Switzerland. Continue cycling back to Constance and perhaps round off the day in one of the many lovely restaurants.

Today's stage destination is Schaffhausen. You cycle through picturesque Swiss fishing villages, always along the southern shore of Untersee and via the medieval town of Stein am Rhein.

In the morning, excursion to the Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. Then on the other side of the Rhine back to Stein am Rhein and further along the Höri peninsula to Gaienhofen, from where you board the boat to the island of Reichenau. From there it is only a few kilometres back to Constance.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.

Note: If you are travelling with your own bikes, any stage location can be the start/finish.

Tour character

Easy

The journey is mostly on cycle paths or quiet side roads, most of which are also tarmac. There are very few climbs along the entire route. The cycle route has its own signposting that leads around the lake through all three countries.
