Enjoy Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia

Explore the Baltic coast and the National Parks of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by bicycle on scenic routes. The tour includes the three capital cities – Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn – with their historic districts designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO; and the previously-closed Curonian Spit and beautiful Estonian island of Hiiumaa. Travel from Lithuania in the south, through Latvia and on to Estonia in the north; experience a wide variety of towns, villages and countryside for an excellent introduction to the very distinct characteristics of these quite different countries.

Itinerary

Arrive in Vilnius, which has been the capital of Lithuania for more than 600 years. Individual transfer to the hotel (not included). Check-in at the hotel. 7:00 p.m. (19:00) Reception meeting with the tour guide at the hotel. Optional dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast enjoy a guided city tour of Vilnius. Afternoon trip by bus to Trakai, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After a visit to the 14thC island castle built on a small island in Lake Galvė start your first cycle ride through picturesque countryside on gentle hills, then transfer by coach to Kaunas. Arrive in Kaunas, check-in and optionally have dinner at the hotel.

Morning transfer along the Nemunas River to the coast. En route passing 16th-17thC castles of Raudonė and Panemunė. In the afternoon cycling to Ventė Horn famous for its bird observatory and the 19thC lighthouse which was used for more than 100 years. After a short bus transfer arrive in Klaipeda, the main seaport of Lithuania, check-in at the hotel and have dinner in local restaurant (included).

In the morning take the boat across the Curonian Lagoon to Nida en-route enjoying the beautiful view of the Curonian Spit sand dunes which separate the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. Sightseeing around Nida, one of the most beautiful resorts in Lithuania. Then cycling on the Seaside Cycle Route along the Curonian Spit famous for its amber and fine sand beaches. En route to Klaipėda stop at the “Dead” sand dunes and go swimming in the Baltic Sea. Optional dinner at the hotel.

Early morning ride to Palanga through the Seaside Regional Park, a former soviet military training area. Arrive in Palanga, the biggest Lithuanian seaside resort for a tour which includes a visit to the Botanical Garden and the Amber Museum in the Palace of Count Tyszkiewicz, with over 25000 pieces of amber and 15000 insects on display. Afternoon transfer to Riga (Latvia). En-route stop at the Hill of Crosses, the unforgettable sight of thousands of crosses placed on two small hills. Continue to Riga, the capital city of Latvia. Arrive in Riga, check-in and have dinner at the hotel (included).

After breakfast a guided city tour of Riga Old Town, a medieval Hanseatic town famous for its Art Nouveau buildings. In the afternoon free time in Riga or cycling to Jurmala, the largest resort in the Baltic States well known for its long, white, sand beaches, mineral waters and mud with healing properties. Transfer back by coach to the hotel in Riga. Optional dinner at the hotel.

Morning transfer to Sigulda, the most popular resort in Latvia, in the Gauja River Valley. Cycling through Gauja National Park to Saulkrasti, en route enjoy spectacular views of Gauja River valley with Gutmana Cave, visit Turaida Castle and the oldest Latvian Church, Krimulda, built in 1205. End the ride with a visit to the Latvian bicycle museum followed by a transfer to Riga. Optional dinner at the hotel.

Morning transfer to the Estonian border where the cycling begins, travel on picturesque roads along the Baltic Sea Coast. Transfer to Haapsalu with a stop in Pärnu, the Estonian “Summer Capital”. Arrive in Haapsalu famous for its Bishop’s Castle, healing mud baths and the longest railway station in Estonia built to accommodate the arrival of the Russian royal family’s train in the 19thC. Check-in and optionally have dinner at the hotel.

Early morning transfer to Rohuküla to catch a ferry to the beautiful Estonian island of Hiiumaa known as a nature lovers’ paradise. Take a cycle ride along the Baltic coast; en route explore several famous lighthouses – from Tahkuna and Ristna designed by French architect Eiffel to the Kopu lighthouse, one of the oldest still operating lighthouses in the world (1531). Dinner at the hotel (included).

Enjoy a morning cycle ride across Hiiumaa island’s wild beauty before crossing a road bridge onto Kassari. In keeping with local tradition, add your stone to the tip of Sääretirp before the final ride. After visiting a local wool factory transfer by coach back to the ferry going to the mainland. In the afternoon arrive in Tallinn, check-in at the hotel followed by a guided city tour of Tallinn Old Town. Optional dinner in local restaurant.

Breakfast at the hotel. End of the tour.

Sehr informative und abwechslungsreiche Reise
Die Räder waren technisch in einem sehr guten Zustand, die Organisation war ausgezeichnet. Man erhielt eine Fahrradtrinkflasche, die man oft wieder am Bus befüllen konnte, sowie eine Ortlieb-Packtasche für die Reise. Für die nächsten Tagesziele wurde regelmäßig Info-Material verteilt. Durch die gute Aufteilung der Bus- bzw. Radstrecken war niemand überfordert (einige ältere Teilnehmer hatten E-bikes), insgesamt wurde sehr viel Abwechslung geboten. Erfreulich war, wie gepflegt es in allen drei baltischen Ländern ist, besonders die Hauptstädte haben ein ausgesprochen gutes Flair. Weniger gut fanden wir die sehr einseitige Darstellung der Geschichte durch die beiden Reiseleiter.
