East Frisian island hopping

The charm of the north

The East Frisian Islands in the North Sea have their very own flair and character. They are all characterised by the vastness of the sea, the waves and the beaches, and yet Borkum, Norderney and Langeoog are worlds apart. An offshore climate awaits you on Borkum, Norderney is sophisticated and Langeoog is almost completely car-free. The East Frisian coast, on the other hand, has its charms: the old chieftain's seat of Aurich or crabs in the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel. Rough is the charm of the north, rough and warm.

Itinerary

The information meeting and bike handover (if booked) take place in the late afternoon. The seaport town is home to several museum ships. If you like fish, you should try matjes or crabs here. One overnight stay in Emden.

Your journey takes two hours across the sea before you reach Borkum, the largest East Frisian island. Once a refuge for pirates, later shaped by whaling, today travellers are conquering the island. Explore the landscapes of Borkum on the 130 km (81 mi) network of cycle paths.

Cycling will take you to the romantic fishing village of Greetsiel, the largest crab cutter harbour in the Weser-Ems region. Treat yourself to a short break before continuing north, past Leybucht, where, with a bit of luck, you may spot seals. Overnight stay in Norden/surrounding area.

Treat yourself to a short break before continuing north, past Leybucht, where, with a bit of luck, you may spot seals. Overnight stay in Norden/surrounding area. (approx. 55 km)

Chieftain's castles and the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia in Dornum line your route today before you cross over to Langeoog to spend two nights on the car-free island.

Traffic jams, exhaust fumes, honking horn concerts - there's none of that on the car-free island of Langeoog, once home to singer Lale Andersen (Lili Marleen). Instead, there are sand dunes over 20 metres (66 ft) high, good sea air and, of course, plenty of opportunities for cycling or sunbathing.

Back on the mainland, cycle from Bensersiel to Aurich. Follow the meanders of the Ems-Jade Canal. Your route takes you to Emden almost without a car.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.

Otto von Bismarck and Heinrich Heine were guests on Norderney; today, the oldest seaside resort on the East Frisian Islands welcomes you – for a bike ride past the lighthouse in the centre of the island, mills and tidal creeks. Alternatively, a walk along the beach would be a delightful option. Norderney's sandy beach is 14 kilometres long in total. Another overnight stay in Norden/surrounding area.
