The Spree forest cycle path

Impressions of the ‘Brandenburg Venice’

Just 100 kilometres south-east of Berlin, the Spree divides into a widely ramified river system with countless canals and streams. The farmsteads, villages, forests, meadows and farmland surrounded by watercourses cannot be found anywhere else in Europe. As a biosphere reserve, the primeval forest-like high forest forms the actual core area of the Spreewald. The Upper Spreewald is dominated by farmsteads and villages, which are spread out over a large, garden-like landscape. The Lower Spreewald is a quieter region with large meadows and wooded areas.

Itinerary

Individual journey to Cottbus. Branitz Park, a masterpiece of garden design created by Prince von Pückler-Muskau, and Branitz Castle invite you to explore them. Round off the evening in a cosy restaurant in the old town.

The Spreewald can be reached quickly via a direct route to Burg. It is worth making a detour to the Vetschau white stork centre. Between Leipe and Lehde you cycle along one of the most beautiful sections of the route through the high forest. Overnight stay in Lübbenau.

The route leads along the Spree to Lübben. Immediately after Lübben, the route follows quiet paths into the less popular but no less attractive northern part of the Spreewald to the Spreewald villages of Krausnick and Schlepzig.

Lake Neuendorf and Lake Groß Leuthen offer unadulterated bathing fun before you reach the most beautiful village in the Lower Spreewald today. In Schlepzig, many sights await you, such as the Farmers' Museum (run by the village itself), the private brewery, the Spreewald Information Centre and some nice places to stop for refreshments. You return to Lübben through a marvellous landscape of ponds.

After Lübben, you immerse yourself once again in the tranquil landscape of the biosphere reserve and cycle through a magnificent landscape of forests and meadows. A detour via Alt Zauche to Straupitz with its remarkable Schinkel church and old linseed oil mill offers an interesting alternative route on this stage.

Welcome to Burg, the Venice of the North. Explore the scattered settlement by water, on foot or by bike. Visit the Bismarck Tower (29 m / 95 ft high) and take in the views of the surrounding area. Nearby is the Spreewälder Kräutermanufraktur with its medicinal and spice plant garden. In the afternoon or evening we invite you to relax for 2 hours in the Spreewaldtherme (incl.).

Cycle along the old Spreewald railway line today. You reach the stork village of Dissen with its interesting local history museum. Between Dissen and Maiberg you can experience a successful river renaturalisation. The new Spree floodplain is the habitat of many new plant and animal species and will inspire you. You then reach the old fortress town of Peitz and cycle through the Peitz ponds. Before you reach Cottbus, you should take a look at the future ‘Ostsee’, which is being created from a former open-cast lignite mine.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
