Hop on your bike and come along
Let’s go for a cycle through Germany or across Europe. We offer guided tours, for example, or self-guided rides.
Whether as a centre based tour, a roundtrip or along popular cycle routes such as the Elbe Cycle Route or the Danube Cycle Route – they are all beautiful.
Our cycling tours offer an exciting and unique experience. Cycling allows you to take in the sights in a truly breathtaking way. You’ll soon find that you perceive nature and the landscape differently and more intensely.
In this blog post, you’ll find some basic tips on how to prepare, so that your first cycling trip is perfectly organised.
Our tips for your first bike trip
| First of all, a quick tip: when planning your trip, always check the difficulty levels of the individual cycling tours. These will tell you whether the route suits your needs. This way, you can quickly see if the tour is right for you. |
1. Where would you like your cycling trip to take you?
Whether in Italy, Germany, Switzerland or France, there is plenty to discover throughout Europe.
Still can't decide which European country to visit? That's completely understandable – after all, cycling is wonderful everywhere in Europe.
Some people have already been on holiday all over the world, whilst others haven’t travelled much yet. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve travelled frequently or been on many cycling trips. Discovering a new region, new countries and cultures, as well as their sights, is always a great adventure.
Of course, the world and all its countries are fascinating, but a “holiday in your own country” always feels like a new adventure. So book your next cycling holiday with Rückenwind Reisen and enjoy carefully selected routes; we’ll take care of the accommodation, leaving you free to explore the region at your leisure.
The classic cycling tours in Europe
Danube cycle route
The Austrian Danube Cycle Path runs from the ‘City of Three Rivers’, Passau, via Linz and the world-famous Wachau region to the beautiful metropolis of Vienna, always with a view of the river. At the same time, the Danube Cycle Path offers so many options that there is a suitable tour for everyone.
The Danube is approximately 340 km long and can be cycled in 5–12 days. Depending on your mood, fitness level or budget, you can choose between country inns, 3***/4**** hotels and deluxe hotels.
With daily arrival options, the choice to book an extra night at each stage destination or to use the convenient return transfer, everyone can ‘tailor’ their trip to suit their individual needs. This makes the Danube Cycle Path ideal for families too.
One of the most beautiful destinations – the Weser Cycle Route
An insider's tip, perfect for beginners and always a good choice
For many years, the Weser Cycle Route has been among the top German cycle routes and has received numerous awards. For the past few years, it has been recognised as Germany’s most popular long-distance cycle route at the International Tourism Exchange in Berlin.
The main attractions lie in the diverse landscape, which stretches from the low mountain ranges of the Weserbergland to the North Sea.
The Weser Cycle Route is characterised by its excellent infrastructure, spanning over 500 km, and runs mainly away from main roads, with no significant inclines and on well-maintained paths.
South tyrol and Italy
La dolce vita and idyllic landscapes
South Tyrol combines the best of Austria and Italy. This includes, among other things, delicious cuisine and a Mediterranean lifestyle.
Discover the majestic mountain scenery and idyllic vineyards along the Adige Cycle Route – almost entirely downhill. The destination is Italy’s largest lake, the picturesque Lake Garda – a dream destination for many travellers.
Or go a little further to Verona or Venice – the route is lined with many cultural and scenic highlights. Leisurely cycling at its finest – many tours are also available in a ‘charm’ version!
The most beautiful parts of Poland
When it comes to guided tours, Poland has been a long-standing favourite in our range. The “Masurian Lake District” and “Baltic Coast and Pomerania” tours are extremely popular.
The new “Gdansk–Warsaw” cycle tour has recently been added to the programme. The tour features some major highlights: Gdansk Bay – the Vistula Lagoon – the Oberland Canal – Masuria and Warsaw. A special highlight included in the tour is a two-hour ride on the Oberland Railway (a train journey that travels over land via a ship).
The Danish Baltic coast around the Little Belt
A unique cycling landscape awaits you
Vast, gently rolling fields alternate with dense beech forests that stretch all the way to the coast. Numerous islands, both large and small, create fjord-like landscapes.
Manor houses, picturesque half-timbered houses and charming little towns dot the landscape, and the beautiful scenery adds to the relaxed cycling experience.
2. Self guided or in a group?
Both options are absolutely brilliant!
As part of a group, you’ll feel right at home, and travelling with a tour guide is a relaxed and very comfortable experience. You won’t have to worry about a thing. The guide knows the region inside out, cycles with you through the most beautiful parts of your destination and helps you get to know the country and its people.
However, spontaneity isn’t quite such a priority here. It’s often those little discoveries that make your cycling holiday so special – a sunny spot by a picturesque lake or a wide forest path that leaves a wonderful scent in its wake. When travelling in a group, these short stops aren’t always possible.
If you’d like to take in the scenery at a leisurely pace on a bike, we recommend going on a tailor-made cycling holiday. You get to decide where to stop and what you’d like to do.
| A quick tip: Break longer stages down into shorter sections, so you can make good use of your time by getting off your bike now and then to take in and explore the surroundings. |
Self guided roundtrip by bike
Travelling has never been more enjoyable!
Roundtrip tours are the best proof that sometimes the journey is the most beautiful destination. In the end, you always return to where you started. Strictly speaking, on these tours you haven’t actually travelled a single kilometre further from your starting point.
But does that really matter when, instead, you’re left with countless wonderful memories, fascinating impressions and sensory experiences? We don’t think so! Not in the slightest.
Self guided distance tours by bike
Cycling holiday: a lovely start, a great finish, and plenty of fun!
A delightful cycling tour begins as a cycling holiday in one beautiful place and ends in another. And in between? There are many more beautiful places, stunning landscapes and magnificent buildings.
Centre based tours: One hotel as base
No need to pack a suitcase and plenty of freedom
Bike trips based on one hotel offer a great deal of convenience. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, you won’t need to unpack your bags until it’s time to head home. You’ll be cycling with just a light pack.
Why not take a look at our round-trip tours? Each one features carefully planned cycling routes and lovely accommodation. And you decide for yourself which stages you’d like to cycle and when you’d prefer to relax at the hotel.
3. The right equipment?
Hier finden Sie die wichtigsten Dinge für Ihren ersten Radurlaub:
Clothing
We recommend travelling light. The best choice for a cycling holiday is versatile clothing, such as zipped trousers and a sports shirt.
As it is impossible to predict the weather in advance, you should also pack warm, waterproof and, above all, windproof clothing. No matter which region or country your cycling trip takes you to, never underestimate the weather.
We also recommend bringing swimwear, as many of our hotels have a swimming pool.
Sturdy footwear
“Comfortable and simple” is the motto here. You’ll cycle noticeably better in a lightweight pair of shoes! Sports shoes are ideal for a cycling holiday. Do make sure, however, that they are waterproof. Otherwise, we recommend wearing gaiters over them.
First-aid kit
A graze on your leg, and in the woods of all places? A small first-aid kit for when you’re out and about is just the thing if you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time. It should contain essentials such as plasters, antiseptic, painkillers, insect repellent and nasal spray.
Checklist for your perfect bike trip
4. Your own bike or a hire bike?
We’ll help you make a decision
You are welcome to bring your own bike on our tours. Please bear in mind, however, that our hire bikes are fully equipped for these routes and include insurance.
If you bring your own bike, please ensure it is equipped as follows:
- A secure bike lock
- Saddle bags
- Lights and reflectors
- Spare inner tube, pump and repair kit
- Tools (multi-tools, etc.)
- Water bottles with holders
Why not give your bike a quick check-up.
Our hire bikes always come with a saddle bag. You are also welcome to purchase saddle bags from us. And if you wish to pack valuables separately, such as a camera, maps, wallet, etc., we recommend a handlebar bag. On our Original Rückenwind cycling tours, a handlebar bag is always included as part of the hire bike kit.
